NAME: Monkey D. Luffy
AGE: 19
CANON: One Piece (Live Action)
CANON POINT: Post-Season 1.
CRAU: N/A
OTHER: I'm filling in backstory gaps that the Live Action hasn't gotten to yet with the relevant manga canon, as the adaptation has been following the manga backstories pretty faithfully so far.

SUITABILITY: Luffy is goofy and can act immature, but he's an adult, and he's been on his own and fending for himself for at least a few years before canon starts. The show itself does not throw him into any sexual or even romantic situations, but he can roll with just about any punch and he's a highly adaptable sort of character that can figure out how to get along in just about any situation. Considering how highly he values and latches onto friendships, it'll be fun to develop those tendencies along previously unexplored romantic/sexual lines as well.

HISTORY: Luffy grew up in in a tiny rural village on Dawn Island just outside of the Goa Kingdom. Despite having a Marine Vice Admiral as a grandfather, Luffy was left on his own as young as 6 to be a street urchin, and lived underneath a pier nearby the village's bar. The barkeep (Makino) helped to keep him fed and clothed, but even at that age he was an impossible gremlin who could barely be corralled. When the infamous pirate Shanks picked Windmill Village to use as a home base for about a year, Luffy became hopelessly obsessed with everything Pirate and followed him around like a little duckling. During one of his last visits, Luffy ate the Devil Fruit that Shanks had captured off a Marine vessel without knowing what it was, gaining his rubber powers but losing his ability to swim in seawater. That didn't stop him though, and even after Shanks departed from Dawn Island for good, Luffy's fixation on becoming a pirate remained.

Unfortunately, that royally pissed off grandpa Garp, who came by on one of his rare visits to the island to check on his grandson and found him trying to build his own pirate ship, swearing never to be a Marine. He determined Windmill Village to be too soft and a bad influence on his grandson, so he took Luffy from the only place he'd ever known and dragged him up into Dawn Island's mountain jungles to stay with the Bandit group that he'd already been blackmailing to take care of another grandson. Luffy immediately latched onto the other grandson, a boy named Ace, and took to following him through the jungles with a fervor previously only reserved for Shanks. Though Ace hated it at first, Luffy eventually wore him and his friend Sabo from the nearby Goa Kingdom down until all three were thick as thieves. They became sworn brothers over three cups of sake, and despite ostensibly being able to stay in the bandit compound, all three instead spent all their time running wild and sleeping out in the jungles, doing smash and grabs in Goa Kingdom, playing in the junkyards of Gray Terminal and hunting their own food. Despite the hardscrabble circumstances, Luffy had the time of his life in those years.

But they didn't last. Sabo died while they were still children, killed while trying to leave the island by visiting nobles because his little ship was in their path. Ace and Luffy latched onto each other even harder in their grief, and spent the next several years surviving together and trying to live without regrets in Sabo's honor, which is where a lot of Luffy’s current attitude and outlook comes from. Ace was older by several years so he set out to become a pirate first, and then Luffy was on his own again until he was old enough strike out on his own pirate adventure and kick the series off.

ABILITIES:
Rubber Physiology- Luffy is "made of rubber", and as a result can stretch any part of his body out to immense lengths. Due to the nature of his body's rubber composition, he can also withstand just about any amount of blunt force trauma. Though it does appear to still hurt him when he gets hit or thrown against things, it's not actually possible to do lasting crushing damage or to break his bones or anything, because his skeleton and his organs are just as rubber as the rest of him. Similarly, most projectiles (like bullets, canonballs, etc) can bounce right off of him, and if he's anticipating being hit he can purposefully stretch and aim the ricochet when it happens as well. (Note: Luffy's rubber skin is not immune to blades or other sharp objects. Where he is unlikely to actually be damaged by anything blunt, he can absolutely still be cut and bleed.)
Enhanced Strength- Luffy is shown punching through solid rock pillars, and he completely levels a 5 story building with his battleaxe kick after weakening some of its supports (those aforementioned pillars). He does not need to stretch out his limbs to use his enhanced strength, but doing so does seem to help with building up a lot more kinetic energy and making it more effective. Will happily nerf his ability to do large scale structural damage to the Hotel while he's staying.
Enhanced Speed- While he doesn't have any traditional super speed power, by using the ricochet of his own limbs (think: a rubber band snapping back) Luffy can do things like start punching fast enough that he appears to have more than two arms, or slingshot himself across great distances very fast. He also has much quicker than normal reaction times while fighting, which is good because he has a very dodge-heavy combat style.

All this comes with a built-in weakness to Seawater- Luffy is instantly sapped of all his strength by being in contact with seawater. Getting doused by seawater will put him on his ass to the point that it's a monumental struggle to even stand back up, and if he gets dropped into seawater he immediately sinks like a stone, no amount of flailing around helps. This can also be applied to a mineral from his own universe called seastone, which affects Devil Fruit users in the same way as seawater but can be made into handcuffs or weapons.
VICES:
Selfish- Luffy eats to excess every chance he gets, regardless of how precarious that is on a ship on the open sea. If he wants to do something he just does it, no matter how anyone else feels about the matter or what kinds of consequences might blow back on anyone involved. Luffy’s main motivator is to have fun, and he’ll drag other people kicking and screaming into the whirlwind of whatever he’s doing in the moment, almost always without really asking or offering them an out. Whenever he can charm his way out of doing things and/or paying he will, and he’ll take cheerful (but rather mercenary) advantage of the leeway people give him unless they really, really put their foot down.
Reckless- Luffy has a delusional level of self-confidence in his ability to bounce back from literally anything, and no fear of his own death. If anything, he’ll hear that things are life-threatening and immediately be even more inclined to go do them. If someone tells him about a place called Death Tornado Island for instance, he’d try to plot a course immediately. He’ll also do things like throw himself and his allies into incredibly dangerous conflicts, even when he gets warned in advance not to. While he doesn’t do this maliciously (usually when he picks big fights he doesn’t seem likely to win, he’s doing it because he’s trying to help someone), that doesn’t make the consequences of his actions any less real to himself and others.
Stupid- Let’s not mince words, Luffy is dumb as a box of rocks. He does not do a lot of deep thinking, ruled mostly by his whims and whatever catches his attention in any given moment. He’s incredibly gullible, almost as bad at realizing he’s being lied to as he is at lying in the first place (which is really, really bad), and he has glaring gaps in his understanding of his own world that constantly baffle even his closest companions. He grew up with literally no education at all, formal or otherwise (aside from Grandpa Garp's School of How to Survive Physically in Various Ludicrous Situations), and it really shows. Rather than seek to fix the deficiency in himself, Luffy instead tries to surround himself with people who can compensate for those intellectual shortcomings, which is effective only until the point that he doesn’t have any of those people around, which is obviously going to be the case in a game even more frequently than it already is in canon.
VIRTUES:
Emotional- One of Luffy's greatest strengths is that he's not bogged down by any sort of toxic societal baggage relating to expressing or feeling emotions. If he wants to cry or laugh or pout he’ll just do that, who cares what anyone else thinks? One of the reasons that he has such unshakable self-confidence is because he is never ashamed of his own big, over-the-top feelings, or of letting people see them. Aside from fight tactics (he is a shounen protag after all), the only place Luffy really demonstrates any intelligence is in reading and understanding other peoples’ emotions. Most of the time this manifests as him being a pretty good judge of character, though that’s obviously more complex in an RP situation. For characters that Luffy gets close to, he tends to pay a lot of attention to their emotional well-being, and it really helps him forge strong bonds despite being such an irreverent airhead otherwise.
Outgoing- Monkey D. Luffy is whatever the polar opposite of shy is, and he seems to have a limitless social battery. Luffy loves getting to know people, and he is extremely delighted whenever he meets someone that’s even a little bit Weird. He brings an earnest enthusiasm to just about every conversation he gets himself into, and he is almost absurdly non-judgmental and non-discriminatory, allowing him to make new lifelong friends and allies literally wherever he happens to go.
Resilient- Luffy has the ability to knuckle down and push through some pretty absurd situations, both physically and mentally. Physically, Luffy can deal with a lot of punishment and just keep getting up every time he gets knocked on his ass, aided by his powers but also by his indomitable will. He basically never backs down once he has decided that something is worth digging his heels in and really fighting for, and that’s true in the emotional sense as well. Luffy has been through a lot of hardship, but you’d never guess that based on his visibly positive outlook on life. He has very strong sense of joy and excitement that helps him pull through any dark times experienced and find ways to genuinely enjoy everything he’s doing and everyone he meets.
SUIT REQUESTS:
Hearts- My first choice is Hearts. Luffy relies a lot on his emotions to dictate what he does, and he has a habit of taking big leaps of faith based on how he feels about things rather than considering logic or evidence presented to him. Sometimes, he goes with his gut even when it is in direct contrast to evidence presented to him. This tends to work out for him in canon, but having an active Hearts suit twist up his emotions and blow them out of proportion would make him question himself in ways we only got a small taste of in canon. Unlike most of his emotions, which he lets himself feel freely and loudly, he has a tendency to try to shut down and shy away from the more negative feelings associated with Hearts (especially things like loneliness, anxiety, possessiveness) in a way that sometimes it's hard to tell he even feels anything other than big, positive emotions, so it would be a side to CR that would be interesting to explore that I might not be able to otherwise. In game I'll really lean into his tendency towards infatuation, his desire for companionship and his obsessiveness about the people that he likes just by the nature of the setting being so geared towards sex and relationships, all of which slot nicely into Hearts as a suit.

Diamonds- Luffy is an intensely physical person. A good deal of his confidence (cockiness, really) comes from the fact that can do just about anything he sets his mind to physically, given enough time and motivation. He relies a lot on physically being able to get his way when push comes to shove, and being essentially controlled by his body's needs in a way that detracts from every other impulse or whim will make him start to grow out of his unquestioned belief in his own ability to do everything without concern for the consequences in a way that only a truly spectacular beatdown could in canon (ah, shonen.) I do also adore playing out things like overwhelming lust, marathon sex, oversensitivity, etc, so an activated Diamonds suit would be a lot of fun for me personally.

SAMPLES: Sample One- My toplevel on the TDM, all threads ongoing! [See also: tagouts one & two.]
Sample Two- A PSL thread that I think demonstrates how Luffy's outgoing nature manifests around non-established CR pretty well.
Sample Three- An introspection-heavy meme thread that demonstrates consistent tagging over some length of time (and a little bit of foolin around.)
